A Message from the Athletics Department
Ohio Dominican University must abide by all NCAA recruiting regulations. The university is also responsible for informing “representatives of our athletic interests” what they may and may not do to assist in the athletic recruiting process.
A “prospective student-athlete” (or “prospect”) is someone who has started classes for the ninth grade or has received a benefit not provided to general students.
The NCAA defines a “representative of our athletic interests” as someone who has done any of the following:
• Participated in or is currently a member of any organization promoting ODU athletics,
• Made financial contributions to the athletic program
• Been involved in promoting ODU athletics, or
• Assisted in the recruitment of a “prospective student-athlete.”
Once you become a “representative of our athletic interests,” you retain this status indefinitely.
“Representatives of our athletic interests”
MAY NOT:
• Have off-campus contact with or make telephone calls to a prospective student-athlete or his/her parents (unless there is a pre-established relationship and the call or contact is not made for recruiting purposes),
• Contact the coach, principal, or counselor of a prospective student athlete in an attempt to evaluate the prospective student-athlete, or
• Visit the prospect’s institution (high school or college) to pick up films or transcripts pertaining to the evaluation of the prospect.
“Representatives of our athletic interests”
MAY:
• Have direct contact with the prospect on the ODU campus,
• Write to or email a prospect after September 1 of the prospect’s junior year, and
• Make off-campus contact with or a telephone call to a prospect or his/her parents only if you are a pre-established family friend or neighbor, the contact or telephone call is not made for recruiting purposes, or the contact or telephone call is not initiated or encouraged by a member of the ODU coaching staff.
Violating the NCAA recruiting regulations could affect the eligibility of the prospective student-athlete, as well as open ODU to possible NCAA sanctions and forfeitures.
If you have any questions concerning recruitment, prospective student-athletes, or representatives of our athletic interests, please contact:
